I often get asked, “What are the best areas to stay in Bangkok?”. Now the answer may not be as simple as you may think!
Bangkok is a mega city with around 10.9 million people living there and over 4079 different restaurants across the metropolis.
It is a great place to start your trip to Thailand and you should definitely NOT skip it if it is your first time travelling to Thailand.
Whether you are planning to head down South to the incredible islands or head up North to the wonderful cities; Bangkok is a place you need to give at least 2 or 3 days of your trip to if you have never been!
It is a place that has some of the best food, sights, temples and atmosphere. It is absolutely chaotic. Not to mention an aroma that only those who have visited Bangkok will know what I mean. It really is a place like no other and will leave you wanting more after you leave it. Not to mention some of the best food I have had in Thailand has been in Bangkok!
Do not skip Bangkok and really make the most of your time there as I am sure once you visit it once, you will be back for more again!

Sukhumvit stands as my favourite area to stay in Bangkok, renowned for its developed and trendy ambience that encapsulates the essence of central Bangkok.
Situated in central Bangkok, Sukhumvit offers easy access to lots of different attractions making it an ideal spot to base your Bangkok adventure. Notably, Sukhumvit is in close proximity to key landmarks such as the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and the bustling markets of Chatuchak Weekend Market.
What’s more, its strategic location ensures hassle-free travel from the airport, with the Airport Link Train connecting directly to the BTS Phaya Thai station, allowing for a seamless transition to Sukhumvit from Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Once in Sukhumvit, navigating the city’s diverse offerings is a breeze, thanks to the extensive BTS Skytrain network running both along and above Sukhumvit, providing swift transportation to various sites and attractions across Bangkok.
Whether you’re exploring the historic temples, indulging in street food delights, or immersing yourself in the city’s vibrant nightlife, Sukhumvit’s central location ensures that all of Bangkok’s wonders are within easy reach.
It’s a bustling hub packed with some of the best hotels, bars, restaurants, clubs, shops, and malls, offering everything a traveller could desire right at their doorstep. Despite its popularity among tourists, Sukhumvit retains a distinct local vibe, with many Thais living and working in the area, adding an authentic touch amidst the clear Western influence.
The Sukhumvit line caters to a diverse array of preferences, from the tourist-oriented areas like Nana and Asok, where you’ll find a lively mix of massage houses, Irish pubs, and street vendors, to the more upscale vibe of Thong Lor.
As you venture further along the line, you’ll encounter truly local territory, where the presence of foreign faces and English diminishes, offering a glimpse into authentic Thai life. For me, the sweet spot lies somewhere between Asok and Thong Lor stations, right in the centre of the action yet just a few stops away from both worlds.
Sukhumvit is the ideal choice for travellers seeking a mix of everything from vibrant nightlife and tantalizing street food to the comfort of Western amenities. It’s perfect for those who prioritize easy access to public transport and crave a blend of tourist hotspots and local experiences. If it’s your first time in Bangkok, Sukhumvit offers the perfect introduction to the city’s diverse charm.
When it comes to accommodation options, the Sukhumvit area has some great choices. If you are a budget-conscious backpacker, the quirky Piccolo Hostel offers clean, modern rooms just a minute’s walk from the BTS station, making it a total bargain. When we stayed here we found it was a great deal with clean rooms and great accessibility to the wider Bangkok area.
Other people might prefer the Adagio Bangkok, where rooms exude a luxurious vibe at an affordable price, conveniently located near the Phrom Phong BTS station. And for those seeking the pinnacle of luxury, Sofitel Bangkok beckons with its plentiful amenities and lavish surroundings, offering a truly regal experience to start your Thailand trip in style! We also enjoyed our stay at the Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit which had a large swimming pool, rooftop bar and room service. The Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit was definitely one of the best hotels in Bangkok!
Khao San Road
If you are looking for a crazy, party-hard yet incredibly convenient location within Bangkok to get your Thailand trip started off with a bang, the famous Khao San Road is the place to stay. Just remember if you are staying directly on the strip, don’t forget to bring some earplugs as the music blasts loud till about 6 am in the morning. Another good solution I found was to drink as much as possible so you didn’t have to worry either way!
Khao San Road is located near the heart of Bangkok and is a place of contrast, excitement, and a touch of chaos. While some may dismiss it as too touristy or overrun, there are certainly reasons why it continues to attract visitors from all over the world.
Positioned just a stone’s throw away from Bangkok’s historic Rattanakosin district, the Khao San Road area offers unparalleled convenience to some of the city’s most iconic tourist attractions. Within a 20-minute walk, you can find yourself standing in awe of the majestic Grand Palace, marvelling at the towering Sao Ching Cha (Giant Swing), or ascending the steps of Wat Saket (Golden Mountain) for panoramic views of the city.
Despite its central location, Khao San Road lacks direct access to Bangkok’s efficient rail systems, which can be a drawback for some travellers. However, for those willing to embrace alternative modes of transportation such as taxis (use Grab to get the best prices), TukTuks or local buses, Khao San Road remains a great location to stay in Bangkok.
The area boasts great budget-friendly accommodations, ranging from quaint guesthouses to bustling hostels, ensuring that visitors can find a comfortable place to rest their heads without breaking the bank. Notable options include Rambuttri Village Plaza, D&D Inn, and NapPark Hostel. These are all cheap options that are located near the heart of the strip – just remember to bring your earplugs!
One of the undeniable draws of Khao San Road is its diverse culinary scene and vibrant nightlife. From street food vendors serving up Thai food delights like pad Thai and grilled skewers to more adventurous offerings such as fried insects and diverse cuisine, including crickets, grasshoppers, and even crocodiles! You are bound to have fun whilst still eating something delicious on the strip whilst hundreds of people walk around you in pure chaos!
For those seeking a taste of home, international cuisine options are also plentiful, with everything from Italian pizza to Israeli falafel readily available. Not to mention there are plenty of incredible Michelin-listed restaurants within walking distance just a few minutes off the main strip. Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu was our favourite we visited when we went, arguably one of the best pad Thais we have had in Thailand!
As the sun sets, Khao San Road transforms into a bustling nightlife hotspot, with bars and clubs pulsating with energy and extremely loud music until the early hours of the morning so if you aren’t a fan of that – stay away. That being said, I feel everyone needs to experience the chaos of Khao San Road once in their life, there is nothing quite like it!
Some of our favourite bars in the Khao San area were Gulliver’s Travels, The Club, Buddy Beer Wine Bar and The Bangkok View Roof Top Bar which all offer a mix of live music, cheap drinks and lively atmospheres that draw revellers from near and far.
However, it’s important to note that Khao San Road isn’t without its drawbacks. The bustling thoroughfare is known for attracting a mixed bag of travellers, including some less savoury characters. From pushy tuk-tuk drivers to opportunistic scammers, you should exercise caution and remain vigilant while navigating the area. Additionally, Khao San Road has gained notoriety as a hub for sex tourism, which may not appeal to all travellers however when I visited this was not too prevalent compared to places in Pattaya or Bangla Road for example.
From its humble origins as a rice-trading hub to its transformation into a backpacker mecca, Khao San Road has undergone significant changes over the years. Once a quiet residential street lined with family-owned guesthouses, it now pulsates with the energy of travellers from around the globe.
Despite its evolution, traces of its past can still be found, from the narrow alleys leading to hidden gems like VS Guest House to the eclectic mix of street vendors selling everything from handmade jewellery to vintage clothing.
Ultimately, the decision to stay on Khao San Road depends on your priorities and travel preferences. For solo travellers or adventurous spirits looking to immerse themselves in Bangkok’s lively atmosphere, Khao San Road offers a convenient base for exploration.
However, those seeking a more tranquil or upscale experience may prefer to stay in areas like Sukhumvit or Silom, which are well-connected by public transportation and offer a wider range of amenities.
If you do choose to experience Khao San Road for yourself, be sure to take advantage of its proximity to Bangkok’s historic landmarks and vibrant street life. Remember, the best way to form your own opinion is to see it with your own eyes—just approach it with an open mind and a sense of adventure and you will have a great time. Also, be prepared to not get much sleep!
Bangkok Riverside
Nestled along the graceful curves of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok Riverside stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. This area dubbed the River of Kings, stretches from the royal island of Rattanakosin to the Thonburi side. Bangkok Riverside is a great location to stay in Bangkok within walking distance of many must-see destinations.
In my opinion, Bangkok Riverside offers a great blend of old-world charm and modern luxury giving you the ultimate experience when visiting Bangkok with the best of both worlds. There are majestic temples and historic landmarks within walking distance and across your eye view you will find towering skyscrapers and busy streets with action everywhere.
Whether you’re strolling along the riverbanks or exploring the bustling streets, there’s always something fascinating to discover and is arguably the most vibrant place I have stayed in Bangkok.
Situated in central Bangkok, it is a prime spot for exploring the city’s historic roots, with iconic landmarks such as Wat Arun and Wat Prayoon only a few minutes walk away. The area is also conveniently close to attractions like Chinatown and Rattanakosin Island, home to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. In addition to this, the Riverside offers easy access to transportation options like the BTS and River Boat. When I visited it was definitely one of the most easiest places to navigate around Bangkok from and definitely the most scenic.
I would say that the Bangkok Riverside is the perfect place to stay in Bangkok for families and couples. Families will appreciate the convenient access to family-friendly attractions like Asiatique which is a riverside market full of incredible Thai street food, shops and even a big wheel looking over the river.
Furthermore, one thing I think everyone should do is have a dinner cruise along the riverside area. You get a great view of the city centre sailing past temples, the palace and modern Bangkok too.
If you are looking for luxury hotels, this area has them in abundance. For those seeking luxury and elegance, The Siam and the Mandarin Oriental stand out as some of the best hotels along the Bangkok Riverside. These iconic hotels offer unparalleled service and breathtaking views of the river, providing an unforgettable experience. For a more budget-friendly stay, options like Dahra Beauty offer comfortable accommodations and are arguably some of the best low-budget Bangkok hotels.
The food spots are also incredible, from street-side stalls to upscale restaurants, the area boasts a diverse culinary scene that caters to every palate. You can try local delicacies like Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, and Som Tum, or embark on a culinary adventure at one of the many riverside eateries offering panoramic views of the Chao Phraya River. Some of the best dining spots we visited included Supanniga Eating Room which served an incredible Tom Yum Goong and Sala Rattanakosin Eatery and Bar which had a stunning view of Wat Arun. I would recommend visiting there after dark to get a great view of the glowing golden temple.
Exploring the Chao Phraya River is a must-do experience if you stay near the Bangkok Riverside. Whether you opt for a scenic river taxi ride or a leisurely dinner cruise, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Bangkok’s iconic landmarks and bustling river life. Don’t miss the opportunity to embark on a Khlong tour, offering a glimpse into Bangkok’s ancient waterway transport system and the quieter side of city life.
Bangkok Riverside is a great alternative place to stay in Bangkok with its rich history, diverse attractions, and convenient location. We really enjoyed staying here and found there was great food options, easy transport and incredible views.
Siam Square
Siam Square is located at the core of Bangkok stretching along Rama 1 Road and extending to the prestigious Chulalongkorn University Campus. This area is a great place to stay if you want to be placed in the heart of modern Bangkok.
It has a diverse shopping landscape, where trendy boutiques, lively market stalls, and cutting-edge malls converge to create a shopper’s paradise. If you want to make the most of Bangkok’s incredible malls and shopping experiences, this is the best place to stay in Bangkok.
Siam Square One Shopping Mall is a must-visit destination if you are staying in this area of Bangkok with its seven stories, offering everything from budget-friendly local fashion finds to coveted international brands like H&M, Zara, and Uniqlo.
Next to Siam Square, you will also find Siam Paragon which offers luxury designer stores such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Prada. If you love shopping, you need to stay in Siam Square!
With that being said, I found that Siam Square was not merely a haven for fashionistas! It also has some interesting modern attractions within walking distance like the Jim Thompson House Museum and historic cinemas like The Lido and Scala.
The Siam center is also great for nighttime activities, with upscale bars and chic lounges. Furthermore, no visit to Bangkok is complete without visiting a sky bar and here at Siam Square, there are plenty of options. While the area may not rival the nightlife districts of Silom or Sukhumvit, venues like the iconic Hard Rock Café and rooftop bars such as Red Sky provide you with a chilled, relaxing night out that is full of luxury amid the chaos of Bangkok.
Siam Square is a great place to stay for people who enjoy fashion, luxury hotels, couples and families. Some of the best hotels in Bangkok are in this area with some of the best we stayed in being Siam Kempinski and Grand Hyatt Erawan.
In addition to some of the best hotels, you can also find some budget accommodations such as Lub d Bangkok Siam which is a great alternative for backpackers and those who prefer basic living for a cheap price whilst staying in Bangkok.
When it comes to dining, Siam Square has a wide selection from street-side vendors to Michelin-starred establishments. Some of the best dining destinations we visited in Siam Center included Greyhound Café for fusion cuisine and La Monita Taqueria for authentic Mexican flavours.
Siam Square embodies the essence of Bangkok’s allure, offering a seamless blend of shopping, dining, and cultural immersion that is a great spot to be based when you stay in Bangkok.
Silom and Sathorn
Silom and Sathorn are underrated areas to stay in Bangkok if you are coming for your first trip. The areas of Silom and Sathorn in Bangkok have evolved into the major financial centres of Thailand, yet they boast much more than just corporate high-rises and banking headquarters.
Silom, anchored by the cosmopolitan Silom Road, often dubbed Thailand’s ‘Wall Street,’ pulsates with the energy of embassies, banking titans and an array of great restaurants and bars. This district seamlessly marries business with pleasure, boasting iconic landmarks like the Mariamman Temple and the renowned Patpong area, along with upscale bars atop the Banyan Tree Building or the State Tower, offering panoramic views of the city; perfect for a great night out.
Adjacent to Silom, Sathorn stretches from the verdant Lumpini Park to the bustling riverfront. Sathorn exudes modernity, with a range of trendy hotels, and upscale residences and high-end accommodations. Sathorn Road, its main area, is the epitome of modern Bangkok with attractions such as the ‘Robot Building’ and the venerable Wat Yan Nawa temple.
One of the best reasons to stay in Silom and Sathorn is their accessibility across Bangkok, making it a great place to stay if you want to explore the city. It is facilitated by a robust network of transportation options.
The BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway provide swift connectivity to key destinations across the city. We found it super easy to navigate around Bangkok when staying in Silom. Additionally, the Saphan Taksin pier offers a scenic alternative for exploring the city via riverboat, allowing you to soak in the charm of the Chao Phraya River while traversing the iconic Charoenkrung, affectionately dubbed “Bangkok’s Soho.”
When it comes to dining, Silom and Sathorn offer a wide range of dining options. From upscale fine dining venues like Namsaah Bottling Trust and Le Du to trendy eateries like Eat Me and Kom-Ba-Wa, these districts have some of the best diverse restaurants in the city.
For a taste of the city’s vibrant street food scene, exploring Soi Patpong or Suan Plu are great places to visit and are only a few minutes walk away.
If you want a place in Bangkok to visit landmarks like the Mariamman Temple and Wat Yan Nawa then Silom and Sathorn is the perfect place to stay.
In terms of accommodation, Silom and Sathorn offer some good options. The Banyan Tree Hotel and State Tower stand are great luxury options. For those seeking a more intimate experience, boutique hotels like Heritage Bistro and Vesper in Silom, or Kom-Ba-Wa and Small’s in Suan Plu, offer spacious rooms with a rooftop pool and are fairly cheap too.
Chinatown (Yaowarat)
Chinatown, or Yaowarat as it’s affectionately known, is located in the bustling heart of the city. It is one of my favourite places to stay in Bangkok for the food alone. As the oldest area of Bangkok, it can get extremely busy however that is what makes it so great to stay here.
In my opinion, it has the best food in Bangkok and maybe even in the whole of Southeast Asia, however, don’t quote me on that!
It offers a glimpse into a different side of Bangkok that no other area does with jam-packed streets, mouthwatering smells, bright neon lights, crazy street vendors and something going on everywhere you look!
The food in Yaowarat is the best in Bangkok without a doubt! Imagine savouring piping hot dim sum at the crack of dawn amidst the morning hustle or navigating through the labyrinthine alleys in the evening, guided by the enticing aromas of street-side delights. There are all types of food available from unbelievable street food stalls to incredible restaurants.
Some of the best places we ate at in Chinatown were Nai Ek Roll Noodle where we ate their famous crispy pork and noodle soup and also T&K Seafood where we had a seafood hot pot which I still think about to this day!
As good as the food is, Chinatown isn’t just about food either! It’s a shopper’s paradise too. With a mix of traditional markets and modern boutiques lining Yaowarat Road and Sampeng Lane. You can visit the stalls of Warorot Market, brimming with colourful textiles, aromatic spices, and exotic fruits, or hunt for unique treasures at the Thieves Market (Nakhon Kasem), where hidden gems await amidst the chaos. We found some great purchases in both of these markets so it is worth the visit.
If you want accommodations that capture the essence of Chinatown’s charm, look no further than Shanghai Mansion, a boutique hotel nestled amidst the hustle and bustle of Yaowarat Road. Alternatively, The Quarter Hualamphong offers a convenient retreat just steps away from Hua Lamphong Railway Station, perfect if you want to explore the entirety of Bangkok with your base staying in Chinatown.
In my opinion, Chinatown is a hidden gem in the heart of Bangkok, offering a glimpse into the city’s vibrant cultural tapestry and culinary heritage. From its bustling markets to its ancient temples, every corner reveals a new facet of this dynamic district and if you want great food for every meal of the day, you need to stay in Chinatown.
Pratunam
Pratunam is situated between Thanon Phaya Thai and Ratchathewi districts in Bangkok. It is a bustling neighbourhood renowned for its vibrant shopping scene and cultural attractions. It’s an ideal area for travellers who want to immerse themselves in a lively atmosphere and indulge in diverse shopping experiences. With its central location and accessibility to public transportation, Pratunam offers convenience in getting round Bangkok with ease.
The main reason you will want to stay in Pratunam is due to its extensive shopping options. From high-end fashion boutiques to wholesale markets, the area caters to all your needs.
If you stay in Pratunam you will be near Central World Shopping Mall which is one of Thailand’s largest shopping malls boasting nearly 500 stores ranging from upscale retailers to cinemas and restaurants. Additionally, Pratunam Market, Thailand’s third-largest clothing market, offers an authentic glimpse into local life and allows you to find excellent bargains on some authentic clothing.
Beyond street shopping, Pratunam boasts several noteworthy attractions that are within walking distance. Suan Pakkad Palace showcases Thai antiques and traditional houses, providing insight into the country’s rich cultural heritage.
For a panoramic view of the Thai capital, you can head to WALK Rooftop Bar at Centara Watergate Pavilion Hotel Bangkok, where you can savour delicious cocktails and enjoy high-end food. I really enjoyed my time here and is a great place to visit to start your night out in Bangkok.
Another close attraction if you stay in Pratunam is the SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World which offers an immersive aquatic experience, perfect for families and those with young children. It is a great place to spend an afternoon.
Pratunam also offers a great range of different food options with an abundance of Thai street food stalls and restaurants offering Thai cuisine. Talad Neon Downtown Night Market is a great spot to visit with cheap food stalls, offering everything from octopus takoyaki to speciality cocktails with edible glitter.
Furthermore, Big C Supercenter Rajadamri provides a food lover’s paradise, with cheap and delicious Thai dishes available at its bustling food court.
In terms of accommodation, Pratunam offers a range of options to suit different preferences and budgets with some of the best Bangkok hotels for all budgets. For a luxurious stay with easy access to shopping and dining, the Amari Watergate Hotel is an excellent choice. Alternatively, budget-conscious travellers should stay at Citin Pratunam or Best Western Mayfair Suites for comfortable yet affordable accommodations.
Rattanakosin
Rattanakosin is another spot that I enjoyed staying at when visiting Bangkok. This historic district, once the epicentre of the Rattanakosin Kingdom, offers a unique blend of architectural marvels, vibrant markets and serene green spaces, making it one of the best areas to stay in Bangkok.
Located on an artificial island bordered by canals and the Chao Phraya River, Rattanakosin provides easy access to some of Bangkok’s most iconic attractions. The Grand Palace, a masterpiece of Thai craftsmanship and a former royal residence, is only a few minute’s walk away. Adjacent to it lies Wat Phra Kaew, home to the revered Emerald Buddha which you have to see.
Wat Pho, known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is just a stone’s throw away from the Grand Palace. Here, you can look at the colossal Buddha spanning over 160 feet. Additionally, Wat Pho’s renowned massage school offers a chance to experience the art of traditional Thai massage firsthand. Therefore if you want a place that is close to old Bangkok and all the different tourist attractions, Rattanakosin is a great place to stay in Bangkok.
A rare treat is green space in the city centre however by staying in Rattankosin there is plenty of areas nearby. Sanam Luang offers a sprawling green expanse ideal for relaxation amidst the bustling city. Nearby, Saranrom Park provides a tranquil oasis with its lush foliage and historic remnants of King Rama IV’s palace.
Rattanakosin’s charm extends beyond its temples and parks to its vibrant markets and riverside dining. The amulet market near Tha Chang Pier offers a glimpse into Thai spirituality, while the adjacent fresh food market tantalizes taste buds with its array of local delicacies.
When it comes to accommodations, Rattanakosin caters to a diverse range of travellers. For those seeking luxury, the Chakrabongse Villas offer an exquisite retreat with stunning river views. Alternatively, budget-conscious travellers can find comfort at the Old Capital Bike Inn, blending modern amenities with traditional Thai hospitality.
In terms of cuisine, Rattanakosin boasts a plethora of dining options to suit every palate. From the riverside elegance of The Deck by the River to the humble delights of Thip Samai Pad Thai, you can embark on a culinary journey through Thailand’s flavours.
Bangkok Airport
Now staying near Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok International Airport) is only ideal if you have a plane to catch the next morning. Situated about a 50-minute drive away from the city centre, there isn’t too much around the Bangkok Airport.
However, if you are planning to fly off to a different part of Thailand, go back home or visit another country, staying around this area is a great choice. Now, I would only recommend staying near the airport if you plan to stay in Bangkok for less than 24 hours and just need a good place to sleep and store your luggage.
If you have more than a day, I would recommend staying in one of the other locations on this list and experiencing Bangkok properly whilst you can. With that being said, there are plenty of cheap hotels near the airport that will provide you with the bare basics.
I don’t really have any recommendations as to where to stay in this area as any place within 10 – 15 minutes of the airport with a bed suited us well on our way back home. Most hotels also offer a free shuttle to the airport making it super easy to wake up and get to the airport.
For us, we landed at 12pm at night from our flight from Phuket got in a Grab taxi, went to sleep in a basic hotel we payed no less than £8 for the night, fell asleep, woke up in the morning and headed off to the airport.
If you need the hotel for anything more than this then I would recommend staying in a different area however if you want convenience and easiness for a quick departure out of Bangkok this area is perfect.
