Top Islamic Destinations Around the World for Spiritual Seekers

Did you know that in Islam, travelling is a great way if you want to grow spiritually?

We as Muslims are encouraged to learn, think, and worship. And many places around the world are very special to Muslims.

They are linked to prophets, their companions, and important times in Islamic history.

In this blog post, we will explore some of the most important Islamic destinations.

In these spots, you can pray, reflect, and connect with our Islamic history.

Top Islamic Destinations for Spiritual Journeys

Makkah, Saudi Arabia

Which place comes to your mind when you plan a visit to spiritual places?

Most probably it’s Makkah, right?

Well, Makkah is the holiest city in Islam. You can find it in western Saudi Arabia. It’s where the Masjid al-Haram is located, which is the biggest mosque in the entire world. You’ll find the Kaaba right in the middle of this mosque.

When Muslims offer their daily five prayers, they face the  Kaaba.

Muslims go to Makkah to perform their Hajj or Umrah. Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which you have to perform once in your lifetime, on specific days, only if your finances allow you. But you can perform whenever you want, at any time of the year.

If you’re planning to go soon, there are many easy and affordable Umrah deals from London to help you with your trip.

Madinah, Saudi Arabia

Madinah is a very holy city for Muslims, the second-holiest. You can find it about 450 kilometers north of Makkah.

It’s famous because Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) moved here in 622 CE during his journey known as the Hijrah.

The most important building is Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, or the Prophet’s Mosque, which is where his grave is. It also has Al-Rawdah, a special place the Prophet called a “garden from Paradise”. Madinah was the first Islamic state and a big center for early Islamic leadership and education.

Jerusalem (Al-Quds), Palestine

Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem is one of the most important (the third-holiest site) in Islam.

It used to be the very first direction Muslims faced when they prayed, until they switched to facing the Kaaba. You’ll find it inside Al-Haram al-Sharif, also known as the Noble Sanctuary, which also has the famous Dome of the Rock.

Jerusalem is important because, in Islam, it’s where the Prophet Muhammad’s miraculous night journey and trip to heaven happened. Even with political problems, it’s still a very important place for Muslims to visit.

Najaf and Karbala, Iraq

These cities are very important, especially for Shia Muslims, but also for all Muslims because of their history.

  • Najaf is where you’ll find the Imam Ali Shrine. Ali ibn Abi Talib is buried here. And do you know that he was the Prophet Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law?
  • Karbala is famous for a battle that happened there in the year 680. It’s also where Imam Hussain, the Prophet’s grandson, is buried. Millions of people visit Karbala during a special event called Arbaeen, making it one of the biggest religious gatherings every year.

Mashhad and Qom, Iran

  • You’ll find the shrine of Imam Reza. He was the 8th important leader for Shia Muslims. Many people go there on a holy trip, making it one of the most visited places in the Muslim world.
  • In Qom, you’ll find the Shrine of Fatima Masumeh, which is a holy site. It’s also a very important place where people go to study Islam. Because of this, both students (scholars) and people on religious trips (pilgrims) visit Qom.

Fez, Morocco

Did you know the world’s oldest university that’s still open today was started by a woman?

This university is located in Fez, called the University of Al Quaraouiyine, and is named after Fatima al-Fihri. Even the big organisations like UNESCO and Guinness World Records say it’s the oldest university that’s still open today!

This school was really important for teaching people in countries where Islam is a main religion, and also everywhere else in the world.

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul was the main city, or capital, of a big empire called the Ottoman Empire for more than 400 years.

It has lots of old and important mosques (places of worship for Muslims) and other famous Islamic landmarks (special historical places related to Islam).

Let me tell you about its famous places:

  • The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) was built in the 17th century.
  • Hagia Sophia has an amazing story! First, it was a church. Then, it became a mosque.  After that, it was changed into a museum so people from all over the world could come and see it. But recently, it has been changed back into a mosque again.
  • The Eyüp Sultan Mosque is very special because it has the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. He was a close friend and supporter of the Prophet Muhammad.

Final Words

Did you know Islamic spiritual trips are more than just Hajj and Umrah?

You can visit lots of places around the world. When you visit these places, they let you think about Islamic history, learn from scholars, and feel closer to your faith and community. Now, just think about praying at the Prophet’s Mosque, visiting Imam Hussain’s shrine,  or exploring the old, vibrant streets of Fez and Istanbul.
