Travel the world and get paid...
Imagine being lucky enough to exist in a lifetime where it is possible to make money while traveling the world, allowing you to essentially cover your own costs and even make money.
It’s also a lot more straight forwards and easy to do than some may think!
So, how do you make money while traveling?
Similar to making money through side hustles, becoming a digital nomad includes the same vague idea, but from a relaxing and beautiful beach on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, a dog cafe in Tokyo, or any party destination of your choice if you are young and into that kind of thing.
Of course, there are ways to make money whilst traveling which we will cover that aren’t from the comfort of your phone or laptop but can certainly help you maintain your bank balance whilst exploring country after country.
Before we start, I must state that these methods of making money all have one thing in common. They will only work if you put in the effort and time they require to become a success. Putting minimal effort will give you minimal results, to put it simply.
The best ways to make money whilst traveling:
- Becoming a digital nomad
- Holiday tour companies ‘rep’
- Step by step job stops
- Remote working roles
- Bonus tip – spend less instead of earning more
1. Becoming a digital nomad
This is by far the most idealistic to make money whilst traveling, allowing you to carry on progressing in your career and work remotely, whilst traveling Latin America, South Africa, or the futuristic city of Singapore.
The concept sounds very appealing, however, how do you actually go about becoming one?
Firstly, you need to have the skill set to actually become a digital nomad, which includes your average marketing skills such as copywriting, graphic design, web development & creation, SEO, PPC and more! These are all in huge demand from countries across the globe and can all be done via a laptop in a location with a good internet connection, in a country with similiar working hours as the one your client is based in. Think of this job, as basically starting your own pop-up digital marketing agency.
The perfect timezone:
As long as you are in a country with a time zone similiar to the one your client operates in, you can pretty much work wherever you want remotely. For example, if your clientele is based in London, a little town on the southern coast of Italy would be amazing due to it being very close timezone-wise.
The reason for this is of course in case they want to communicate or have urgent changes or problems with the current work you may be carrying out for them. Here are a few examples of locations with timezones similiar to the United Kingdom for reference…
Benefits to work remotely as a digital nomad:
- You are your own boss, all extra cash you make is yours
- The ability to work wherever you want, the world is your oyster
- you don’t have to budget travel, as the money you make will be similiar to your usual wage
- Some countries which charge less may mean you are saving money
2: Holiday tour companies rep:
If you are quite introverted, then this one probably isn’t for you, however extroverts you will feel in your element here.
Choose from exotic locations, as a tour guide for hotels in prime party locations with the main role of your job to basically party and create a fun, exciting environment around you for all the people you are showing around.
One thing I will say is you definitely need to be a certain type of person in order to really pursue this job as an average Joe simply won’t fit. You will need to be creative and kind, yet energetic and confident, all at one time…
Benefits to work as a tour guide or rep:
- Often can receive a commission or bonus for good performance
- Allows you to live in your dream location all day and party all night
- Free accommodation, food and facilities
3. Step-by-step job stops
This type of income is for those who aren’t looking to stop by raging party locations but instead, for example in the Australian outback or the Chilean Patagonia.
This involves stopping off frequently throughout your trips and offering yourself to the locals as a form of work, whether it’s moving boxes, or working machinery in one of the outback farms, both are in demand and can allow you to earn money before returning back on your travels.
Benefits to working step-by-step job stops:
- Meet lots of different people and make different memories throughout your travels
- Earn money and afford to travel wherever your heart desires
- can often result in a visa extension
4. Remote-working roles
Similiar to becoming a digital nomad, working remote roles is pretty much the same, apart from you being an employee for a company and cannot choose your work hours.
However, I will say from personal experience you can be a lot more flexible with your time working abroad and remotely than in an office.
Remote working roles can also bring out a lot of creativity within you compared to sitting in a cramped office all day.
Benefits to working remote roles:
- A lot more peaceful than the office environment
- Allows you to work anywhere in the world as long as the time zone correlates
- Less risky than freelancing work
- Save money on travel expenses
5: Bonus tip - Spend less instead of earning more
Everyone reading this solely only wanting to find ways to earn more when traveling are going about it wrong. The only viable way to travel effectively whilst earning from the above roles, is by cutting costs wherever & whenever you can.
Simple tips such as using Skyscanner, an app that finds you the cheapest flights possible, or booking at cheaper hostels where you may have to share a room. All of this is worth it in order to save money while traveling.
Benefits to spend less instead of earning more
- Exchange pricy hotels for cheaper hostels
- Eat food from locals, which tends to be cheaper in certain regions of the world
- Choose sensible times of the year to visit countries, such as avoiding half-term periods
Earning money while traveling is by no means easy, but then again nor is traveling…
All of the above points can help you become free of any costs when in these exotic locations, by balancing them out with the profit/wages you collect!
When cutting costs, be sure to prioritise safety over saving money, you can save all the money you like but putting yourself in danger to do so, isn’t worth it.
